Vestibular Rehabilitation
Also known as physical therapy for the treatment of dizziness and balance. A goal of vestibular rehabilitation is to train the brain to recognize signals from the vestibular system in coordination from vision and proprioception .If the brain can not rely on information it receives from the vestibular system a persons ability to maintain posture and coordinate balance can be compromised.
When a patient is referred to Wellcare Rehabilitation for balance disorder,a qualified physical therapist first performs a thorough evaluation. This includes observing posture,balance, movement and compensatory strategies. Treatment is based upon exercises to restore motor function by overcoming motor deficits and improving motor patterns.
Wellcare Rehabilitations Vestibular Rehabilitation Program includes the development of an individualized treatment plan that emphasizes exercises to be performed at the clinic and at home. These exercises will include a combination of specific head and body movements with eye exercises. Muscles strengthening and endurance exercises are included as indicated. At first, and increase in symptoms may occur but over time, as the brain and body sort out new movement patterns, improvements in realistic time frames, with less complaints of dizziness and increases in standing stability.
